Business Development can mean two things depending on who you speak to and their position in a company. The overall meaning of Business Development is, as the name suggests, developing the business. This means making the business better. This could mean more profits, higher revenue, increase of market share or expansion into new markets. It could mean making the business more efficient. Business Development can mean all these things.

However, the most common meaning nowadays is to cover what a Business Development Manager does.

What Does A Business Development Manager Do?

A Business Development Manager (BDM), in the most commonly accepted meaning is someone who works for a company in a sales role. A BDM is required to make first contact with potential new customers and build the relationship with them until they are ready to buy. They then advise the sales team the potential new customer is ready to buy so a salesperson can present to the customer and close the sale.

A BDM and salesperson are like 2 halves to a whole. They work closely together to make sales.

  • Using research, identify potential new customers
  • Plan and conduct marketing activities to attract potential new customers
  • Attend conferences and industry events

  • Develop quotes and proposals for potential new customers
  • Identify up-sell and/or cross-sell opportunities with existing customers

A BDM should primarily like speaking to people and enjoy making cold contact with potential customers or clients. Good people skills are important because once you have made contact, you will be required to keep contact with that potential customer and build the relationship, so that when they are ready to buy, they choose your product or service.

Depending on experience a BDM can expect to earn annual wages of:

  • Range – $55,000 to $130,000 per annum
