How to Become a Mystery Shopper
What Does a Mystery Shopper Actually Do?
Mystery shopping is a simple way to earn extra money. You visit a store, cafe, bank or hotel as a regular customer. Then you report on what happened.
Businesses use this feedback to check service, pricing and product displays. You might also hear the job called a secret shopper or hidden shopper. The name changes, but the work stays the same.
Who Hires Mystery Shoppers?
Brands rarely manage mystery shopping in-house. Instead, they hire mystery shopping companies to organise visits and recruit shoppers. These mystery shopping firms act as the go-between for you and the client.
Well-known names include Market Force and A Closer Look. Other mystery audit companies run similar programs across Australia. Each one has its own process, so research before you sign up.
How to Spot Reputable Mystery Shopping Companies
They never ask you to pay for training, kits or access.
They explain how and when you get paid.
They offer clear instructions for every assignment.
They have a professional website and real contact details.
They are happy to answer questions before you sign up.
Secret shopper companies that push upfront fees are a red flag. Walk away if the pitch sounds too good to be true.
Step-by-Step: How to Become a Mystery Shopper
Research the market. Look for reputable mystery shopping companies with strong reviews and clear terms.
Create profiles with several firms. More sign-ups mean more chances to find suitable visits.
Complete any assessments or training. Many companies use short quizzes or guided practice visits.
Choose assignments that fit your life. Pick visits near home and within your free time.
Submit detailed, accurate reports on time. Late or vague reports are the fastest way to lose work.
Setting Honest Expectations
Mystery shopping pays per visit. Rates vary, and most people treat it as supplementary income rather than a full-time wage. Some visits also reimburse a purchase, though many do not.
Be honest with yourself about the time involved. Travel, reporting and follow-up all count. Once you track your hours, you will know whether the work is worth it.
