In the USA a Gold Seal Flight Instructor has met the extra requirements under FAA Orders 8700.1. This means they:
- Can teach and evaluate a large number of student pilots
- Maintain a high degree of professionalism and success
- Have a high number of their students succeed in obtaining their license on their first attempt
How many hours does it take to become a flight instructor?
A commercial pilot’s license is required in addition to the extra training to become an instructor. Typically the time required is between 190 and 250 hours.
Becoming a flight instructor may also mean taking a refresher course at various times.

A certified instructor can expect to make:
- Range – between $45,000 and $140,000 per annum (hourly rate – $21.63 to $67.30)
- Average – around $55,000 per annum (hourly rate – $26.44)
