How To Make Interviewers See You As The Right “Fit” For The Job — 5 Tips

If you’ve ever been in an interview where you just couldn’t seem to show the interviewer that you’re the best person for the job

Or you thought things went well but weren’t offered the job, then the interviewer probably didn’t see you as the right ‘fit’ for the job.

There’s a definite strategy for helping the interviewer come to the decision that you’re the right candidate for the job.

First up…

Ask people in your network what they can tell you about the company.

The more you can find out about the company, the better. And the more informed and interested you’ll come across in the interview, which will impress the hiring manager.

Thirdly…

Use what you find out about the company and its people to come up with a compelling reason as to why the company should hire you.

What this is will obviously depend on the role you’re applying for, but rest assured that whatever role you’re applying for, there is a compelling reason you can use in the interview.

You just have to come up with it.

For example…

For Sales or management roles, it’s easy to come up with a compelling reason to hire you. You’ll increase sales or lower costs. So think about how you’re going to do that.

For a role that’s less directly linked to revenue, like an admin role for example, there are other ways you can show how valuable you’ll be.

The fourth thing is…

Sell yourself in the interview.

Remember, an interview is a sales presentation. It’s not a Q & A session where you’re there to just answer the hiring manager’s questions then leave.

Your job is to sell the hiring manager on why you’re the best person for the job.

And to be offered the job you need to SELL the hiring manager on why YOU are the best person for the job.

This is where your homework on the company and your compelling reason or reasons for them to hire you, come into play.

Which leads to the fifth thing, which is…

Be engaging and confident in the interview.

Most employers will take the more engaging and confident candidate, even if their skill level is a bit lower.

People who have the right skills but give the hiring manager the impression that they won’t engage well with others on their team, tend to be overlooked for a more engaging candidate.

So be engaged in the conversation. Be friendly, hold eye contact with the hiring manager and very importantly, ask questions of your own in the interview. Questions shouldn’t just flow one way from the interviewer.
