Where do you see yourself in 5 years?

Where do you see yourself in 5 years?

The best answer to this question isn’t that you want a management job or to be the CEO.

The BEST, FOOL PROOF way to answer this question is to be aware of what the employer is looking for in the person they hire for the role, and then show them you’re that person.

So when an interviewer asks you this question, what are they ACTUALLY asking you?

The first thing they want to find out is if you intend to be with them for the long term.

It costs time and money to find new staff so employers want their staff to stay with the company for the long term, particularly when they have good people in each role.

So you need to let them know that you intend to stay with them.

The other thing employers are digging for when they ask you where you see yourself in 5 years…

Is they want to establish that you want to stay in the role you’re APPLYING for, not use it as a stepping stone within the company.

For most roles, they don’t want someone who wants to get their foot in the door, then move to the next role as quickly as possible.

They’re looking for stability in the role.

They’re looking for someone who will stay in the role for the long term.

Depending on the company and the job you’re applying for, the company may not be able to offer you a higher position at a later date.

You don’t want to come across as overly ambitious and give the interviewer the perception that you’ll use this job as a stepping-stone to another role.

So you should clearly communicate to the interviewer that you intend to stay in the position for the long term.

So the best way to answer this question is to clearly explain to the interviewer that for the first few years in the role you intend to really immerse yourself in the position.

That you intend to get a deep understanding of all the areas the position covers,

and in particular, understand the areas that need to be improved on.

That you intend to look for opportunities that make your position and the team you’re part of as efficient as possible.

So you intend to become an expert in the role for the company.

Then after that you’d like to be able to extend yourself to other teams or departments of the company and share your in depth knowledge and expertise to help them become more effective and efficient.

This answer is general enough so that it demonstrates to the interviewer you’re not just looking to move to the next role, with an impressive title, within the company as quickly as possible.

It demonstrates that you’ll be a valuable addition to the team, that you’re willing to take on responsibility and that if the company CHOOSES to, you’re a candidate for promotion.
